Why “It Depends” Might Be the Most Honest Answer in Business (and Health)

You know what answer gives me life?

“It depends.”

Not because it’s vague. But because it’s true.

We live in a world that loves a hot take. Algorithms reward the loudest, boldest opinions.

"Websites are dead."

"Posting every day is non-negotiable."

"Lead magnets don’t work anymore."

But here’s the thing: if someone gives you a one-size-fits-all answer to your marketing or your health, I’d recommend running the other way.

Because nuance isn’t weakness.

It’s expertise.

As Clinicians, You’re Fluent in the Language of Nuance

If you’re a health professional, you already get this.

You don’t hand out the same treatment plan to every patient.

You consider the full picture: lifestyle, labs, stress levels, compliance, values, symptoms, history.

What works for one patient could totally backfire on another.

So why would your marketing be any different?

When We Oversimplify Marketing Advice, We Lose the Plot

Here’s a real example.

Yesterday someone asked me, “I heard websites are out. Should I still have one?”

My answer? It depends.

  • Are you getting referrals from social or your local community?

  • Are people Googling your name?

  • Are you trying to fill a group program or just starting out with 1:1 clients?

If you're asking people to invest time, money, and trust in you, they’re going to vet you.

A website isn’t just a vanity project. It’s your digital front door. A place where people can learn:

  • What you do

  • How you do it

  • Why it matters to them

And most importantly, why they should care.

Nuance in Action: More Examples

  • Should I post on Instagram every day?

It depends. If you're overwhelmed or in a busy season, probably not. If you're launching, maybe yes.

  • Do I need a lead magnet?

It depends. Are you collecting emails? Do you have something valuable and clear to offer?

There’s rarely a black-and-white answer.

The right strategy is the one that fits.

What to Do Instead

Stop trying to follow every trending tip.

Start asking better questions.

  • What season of business am I in?

  • What do I have the bandwidth to maintain?

  • Is this advice for me or for someone with a totally different business model?

Final Thought

Clarity doesn’t come from oversimplified answers.

It comes from asking the right questions and building a plan that works for you.

Next time someone hits you with “you HAVE to do X,”just smile and say,

It depends.
